i.Lab Mentorship Program At A Glance
What is the i.Lab Mentorship Program?
The Mentorship Program connects volunteers, including entrepreneurs, subject matter experts, and investors, with startups in the i.Lab’s incubator and non-resident programs.
Who are the Mentors?
Mentors may be UVA alumni/faculty/staff, members of the greater Charlottesville community, current students, or geographically remote volunteers. We define the mentorship program broadly and seek experienced individuals whose available time to commit varies from answering the infrequent question to those who are able to meet with ventures weekly over our 10-week summer accelerator program.
Areas where mentors typically provide guidance include product/market fit, customer development, technology, product development, customer acquisition, lead generation, outbound sales, strategy, marketing and branding. Additionally we find tremendous value in mentors who are simply willing to provide ventures with critical feedback regarding their product(s).
Who are the Mentees?
The mentees are startup companies from the University of Virginia and the greater Charlottesville community. These ventures are focused on a range of businesses, from technology to disaster response to fashion. i.Lab ventures typically have between one and three founders, are pre-seed, and pre-revenue.
What are the benefits?
Mentors gain exposure to enthusiastic entrepreneurs and new ideas through joining our vibrant community. They are invited to i.Lab events throughout the year and are recognized on the i.Lab website, among other digital and print publications. Best of all, mentors have the satisfaction of knowing they are playing an integral role in strengthening the burgeoning central Virginia entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Taking the next step
Thanks for your interest in exploring the possibility of becoming a mentor! Please complete a mentor intake to proceed to the next step. We accept and process mentor interest on an ad hoc basis in the fall and spring. Note: if your role involves working directly with students, you will be required to complete a background check.
